Your CV Isn’t the Problem. It’s Trying to Do a Job It Was Never Designed For.

A CV records your career history, but it can't fully capture your judgement, strengths or potential. Discover why reputation is becoming just as important as your resume.

Your CV Isn’t the Problem. It’s Trying to Do a Job It Was Never Designed For.

Every few years someone declares that the CV is dead. It isn’t. The CV still serves an important purpose. It records your career history. It shows where you’ve worked, what roles you’ve held and, hopefully, what you’ve achieved. The problem isn’t the CV. The problem is that we’ve started expecting it to answer questions it was never designed to answer.

A CV Looks Backwards

A CV is a historical document.

It tells me:

  • where you’ve worked
  • what your job title was
  • how long you stayed
  • what your responsibilities were

All useful information. But hiring isn’t really about the past. It’s about the future.

When an employer hires someone, they’re trying to answer a very different question:

“Will this person succeed here?”

A CV can only answer that question indirectly.

The Questions Employers Actually Want Answered

Think about the best person you’ve ever worked with.

Now ask yourself…

What made them exceptional? Was it because they had the perfect CV? Probably not.

You’d probably describe things like:

  • they solved difficult problems
  • they stayed calm under pressure
  • people trusted them
  • they made good decisions
  • they communicated clearly
  • they helped everyone around them become better

None of those qualities fit neatly into a two-page document.

They’re experienced. Not listed. They’re demonstrated over time, not summarised in bullet points. That’s why hiring is so difficult.

Hiring Has Become a Signal Problem

Today’s hiring process produces enormous amounts of information.

Hundreds of CVs. Applicant tracking systems. Keyword matching. AI screening. Application forms. Assessments.

Ironically, despite having more information than ever before, employers often have less insight.

The strongest candidates don’t always write the strongest CVs. The most capable people aren’t always the best at self-promotion. And some of the qualities that matter most – judgement, curiosity, integrity, adaptability and trust – are almost impossible to communicate through a traditional CV alone.

As we explore in our white paper The Future of Work Is Fluid, hiring has become a signal problem. We have more data than ever, but not necessarily more understanding. CVs remain useful records of professional history, yet they often struggle to communicate how someone actually thinks, collaborates and creates value.

The World of Work Has Changed

For decades, careers were relatively predictable. A CV reflected a largely linear journey.

Today, careers are far more fluid. People move sideways. They build businesses. They consult. They take career breaks. They retrain. They combine multiple roles. The traditional timeline tells less and less of the story.

Increasingly, employers need to understand:

  • How do you solve problems?
  • How do you approach uncertainty?
  • What evidence is there that you create value?
  • What are your strengths?
  • How do other people experience working with you?

Those questions can’t be answered by chronology alone.

Your Reputation Is Becoming More Valuable Than Your Resume

This doesn’t mean you should throw your CV away. Far from it. But it does mean you should spend as much time building your professional reputation as you do polishing your CV.

Your reputation is built through:

  • the outcomes you deliver
  • the people who recommend you
  • the trust you earn
  • the relationships you build
  • the way you show up every day

Unlike a CV, your reputation moves ahead of you. It opens doors before you’ve even applied. It shapes conversations before you’ve entered the room. And in an increasingly connected world, that matters more than ever.

A Better Question

Instead of asking,

“How do I improve my CV?”

perhaps ask,

“How do I make my contribution easier to understand?”

That might mean collecting evidence of your impact. Sharing what you’ve learned. Building trusted professional relationships. Creating a portfolio of your work. Or simply becoming known as someone who consistently delivers.

Those things strengthen your career whether you’re actively looking for work or not.

Join Our Future of Work Masterclass

At Matchez, we believe people are far more than the documents they submit. A career is built on strengths, evidence, relationships and potential, not simply job titles and dates.

If you’d like to explore how the world of work is changing, and what that means for your own career, we’d love you to join our free Future of Work Masterclass.

Together we’ll explore:

  • Why careers are becoming more fluid.
  • Why reputation is becoming more valuable than chronology.
  • How to communicate your strengths and evidence more effectively.
  • Practical ways to build a career that’s ready for the future.

Because your CV was never designed to tell your whole story.

Maybe it’s time we stopped asking it to.
